In Don’t Fit…, I view the frame as an expectation to be met or an obligation to be fulfilled. I gave myself the task of filling the frame with rice in a single layer. But over time, as the rice dries, the pieces reveal that I actually did not fulfill the task. Even though we may put our best efforts forward, we should not expect or accept that who we think we should be or who we think others think we should be is realistic or usual.

…Never Seem... is inspired by the convention of clothing and how they can become so closely related and tied to our identity. Garments are our second skin, and arguably our primary skin. For me personally, clothing has always be related to scrutiny. There’s always a gentle whisper that reminds me of all the inadequacies can come from the culture of clothes. Sometimes I worry about my clothes not matching, being too big, being too small, being too expensive, looking cheap, looking outdated, looking worn out. There can be a lot of expectation and obligation that is attached to the clothing that we wear. With …Never Seem… , I ask at what point does our second skin become so rigid with compliance that we lose our breathing room?

Consistency seems to be a desirable trait whether it is in personality, performance or the products and services that we purchase. The act of making the tableware allowed me to display my personal attempt at providing and performing consistency.

A motif in my work is control (or lack of) over the way my identity appears and the way it is perceived. This piece is a further exploration of control with distortion as the result. The contrived processes that I used show evidence of heavy-handedness, from the exposed nails in the frames, the untrimmed monofilament left on the piece that appears in the imagery to emphasis hand-sewing, to the square cropping of the images. I made rice to make beads, which was then photographed, then edited and cropped, then printed and framed. All of these deliberately chosen actions add up to the distortion that is on display.
